... Winter weather preparedness week continues...
The National Weather Service is observing the week of November 30
through December 4 2015 as winter weather preparedness week in the State
of Georgia. Each day this week we discuss a different aspect of winter
weather. Today we will discuss the National weather service's winter
weather watch... warning and advisory products.
During winter weather events... a variety of products are issued to
keep you informed. In general... watches can be issued 12 to 48 hours
before an event... while advisories and warnings can be issued up to
36 hours prior.
A winter storm outlook is provided in the hazardous weather
outlook... or in a Special Weather Statement... 3 to 7 days prior to
an event... when there is at least a 30 percent chance of hazardous
A Winter Storm Watch is issued when there is a 50 percent or greater
chance of a winter weather event occurring within the next 12 to 48
hours. The Winter Storm Watch can be upgraded to a Winter Weather
Advisory or a Winter Storm Warning when confidence of occurrence
A Winter Weather Advisory is issued when there is an 80 percent or
greater chance of winter precipitation occurring that will cause
inconveniences but does not meet warning criteria.
A Winter Storm Warning is issued when there is an 80 percent or
greater chance of winter precipitation occurring that will meet
dangerous winter storm conditions.
Winter storm conditions include 2 or more inches of snow... a half
inch or more of sleet... or a quarter inch or more of ice
accumulation due to freezing rain. However... its important to note
that a Winter Storm Watch or warning can also be issued at
forecaster and emergency management discretion when significant
impacts are expected but the snow... sleet... or freezing rain
criteria are not necessarily met.
An Ice Storm Warning is issued for an 80 percent or greater chance
of a quarter inch or more of ice accumulations resulting from
Blizzard conditions result when strong winds combine with falling or
blowing snow to reduce visibility to a quarter mile or less for at
least 3 hours. A watch is issued for a 50 percent or greater chance
of blizzard conditions... and a warning is issued for an 80 percent
or greater chance.
Also... don't Forget about the threat of wind chill in Georgia. Wind
chill can be especially dangerous when values drop to 5 degrees
fahrenheit or below. A Wind Chill Advisory is issued for wind chill
values between 5 and -9 degrees fahrenheit. A wind chill watch is
issued when there is a 50 percent or greater chance of values of -10
degrees or below within the next 12 to 48 hours. A wind chill
warning is issued when there is an 80 percent chance of the same
Use this week to prepare for the possibility of winter weather.
