Special Statement
Statement as of 9:34 PM EST on February 3, 2012
... Smoke affecting portions of the Charleston Metro area...
Smoke from an unknown source is reducing visibilities in parts of
the Charleston Metro area this evening... mainly between Summerville
and downtown Charleston. This includes North Charleston and parts
of west Ashley... Goose Creek and Hanahan. Surface observations
and spotter reports indicate visibilities have been as low as 2 to
3 miles at times. The smoke is expected to gradually dissipate
after midnight... but may produce reduced visibilities across parts
of interstates 26 and 526 as well as highways 17 and 52 for the
next few hours.
In addition to poor visibilities... poor air quality can be
expected where smoke occurs. People who have respiratory ailments
that can be triggered by smoke should consider staying indoors.
Motorists should also be alert for sudden changes in visibilities.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
If you observe smoke... email your report to chs.Skywarn@noaa.Gov
or send a tweet to @nwscharlestonsc with the hashtag wxreport.
