Public Information Statement

Statement as of 6:23 am EST on March 20, 2010

... Winter ends and Spring begins today at 132 PM EDT...

The record breaking high temperature of 66 degrees that occurred
yesterday in Burlington may have seemed like Spring but it
officially arrives this afternoon.

The astronomical start of Spring... the Vernal equinox... occurs at
132 PM EDT... today March 20th.

The Vernal equinox occurs when the sun lies directly over the
Equator and brings approximately equal amounts of day
and night across the Earth... including Vermont.

The word equinox is derived from the latin words
for... equal... and... night.

For meteorological purposes... Spring includes the months of
March... April and may.

Despite our recent warm spell... the first week to 10 days of Spring
is likely to have below normal temperatures and above normal
precipitation... according to the National Weather Service/S climate
prediction center.

However as we move toward April... the 30 day outlook calls for a
chance of above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation
for the north country.
