Special Statement

Expires 8:00 AM EST on February 12, 2012
Statement as of 2:59 am EST on February 12, 2012

... Enhanced fire danger today...

Despite very cold air entrenched across the region... exceedingly
dry air will allow relative humidity values to drop to between 20
and 25 percent this afternoon. Gusty northwest winds of 20 to 30
mph this morning... will taper off to 15 to 20 mph this afternoon.

These factors... combined with an overall lack of rainfall across the
area... will increase the fire growth potential today... particularly
in grasses... leaves and bushes. Controlled burning is discouraged
today due to gusty winds and very dry air.

... Arctic blast to bring wind chills into the single digits early
this morning...

Falling temperatures combined with brisk northwest winds will make
it feel like temperatures are in the single digits to around 10
degrees early this morning.

Maximum temperatures will struggle to reach the lower 40s today.
This combined with breezy conditions will make it feel as though
temperatures are in the 20s to low 30s much of this afternoon.

Layered clothing... gloves... and ear protection will help greatly.

1049 PM EST Sat Feb 11 2012

... An Arctic blast will drop wind chills into the single numbers
late tonight and Sunday morning...

Evening winds have been frequently gusting to 30 to 40 mph and as
high as around 50 mph along the Cape Fear coast. Winds will begin to
slowly diminish after midnight.

Falling temperatures will combine with the wind to make it feel as
if it were in the single numbers to around 10 degrees at times late
tonight and Sunday morning. The actual temperature will drop to 20
to 25 degrees overnight.

Not much of a temperature recovery is expected on Sunday. The
Mercury will struggle to reach above 40 degrees and for much of
the day it will feel as if it is below freezing. The incoming air
mass will also be very dry with afternoon relative humidity around
20 percent.

Exposed plumbing will be susceptible to freezing and preventative
measures are suggested to prevent damage.

... Enhanced fire weather danger through Sunday...

Gusty winds along with critical relative humidity will result in
an enhanced fire weather danger through Sunday. Winds will
increase tonight in the wake of an Arctic cold front and the
relative humidity will drop below critical thresholds during
Sunday. The last weather system failed to provide any significant
rainfall to the region... thus fuels are dry.

For these reasons... a significant fire growth potential exists
through Sunday. Small fires could quickly grow out of control and
any type of burning is discouraged.

Winds will gradually diminish during Sunday afternoon... and light
winds will prevail by Monday. However... low relative humidity will
persist through Monday given the dry Arctic air-mass that will be
in place over the area.
