Lakeshore Flood Advisory, Beach Hazard Statement

Expires 10:00 PM CDT on May 31, 2015
Statement as of 9:51 am CDT on May 30, 2015

... Beach hazards statement remains in effect through Sunday
... Lakeshore Flood Advisory remains in effect from 1 PM this
afternoon to 4 am CDT Sunday...

* Lake Shore flooding... waves will build to 8 to 12 ft today
resulting in minor flooding in the typically flood prone

* Timing... this afternoon into tonight.

* Impacts... portions of the Chicago Lake front bike path will
likely become inundated by large battering waves and
impassable... as well as other high wave prone locations.

* High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected
through Sunday evening.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Lakeshore Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds will
generate flooding of low areas along the Lakeshore.

Life threatening waves and currents are expected at the beaches.
People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in
sandbars. Structural currents form along piers where longshore
currents and wave action flow into the structure. Rip currents
and structural currents can sweep you into deeper water.

Exposed beaches are more likely to experience the most
significant wave and current impacts.

Impacts at beaches with protective breakwalls or jetties will be
subject to orientation of structures as well as wind and wave
